Letters from Iran

There are 61 Letters From Iran and as many images that I created that correspond to each letter. The letters were written during the Green Movement in Iran, also known as the Persian Awakening. I received letters from my friend daily, then weekly and then a little more spaced out between 2009 and 2011. I read and shared on social media beautiful and painful stories of the events, actions, thoughts, fears, desires and dreams of the young people in Iran who were mobilized, eager, hopeful and fighting for change and dying in the process.

Most recently during my first solo exhibit, the Living Section Retrospective of My Fertility, I combined the individual images into a 60”x90” quilt of images piece for contemplation, their NEDA (voice) enlarged. I also compiled the letters and images into a book.

This is how it started:

“Letters from Iran is a recount of what is occurring there directly from slow to arrive email letters that a friend in Iran has been sending me for the past 5 days.  My friend is letting me share them with you.  ‘As the word needs to be spread!‘”
