*Map of the Face : Literary Portrait Day Retreat
A Reflective and Collective Participatory Project

In our selfie culture, what does it really mean to have a face? How do we show up? For ourselves and for each other? Join writer Nina Hart and designer/artist Martha Skinner to create a literary portrait through drawing and words, moving inward from self to collective connection. The end product will be an art piece that you’ll get to take home – and yet the process is the map that leads down the road to connection. The retreat will take place on Sunday, October 27 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. in Marshall, N.C.

Martha Skinner’s Installations and participatory documents come to life through collective participation. Her work, which she prefers to refer to as “play”, is created through connection and exchange. As spaces, performances, experiments and community projects, in playful ways they address, highlight, subvert, societal and environmental issues that need transforming. The process by which they emerge is a celebration of life. Martha taught architecture and design for 18 years at the University of Michigan and at Clemson University with a focus on representation. “Draw a Map of Your Face” is a question that intrigued her as a young student herself applying to the school of architecture at the Cooper Union and reappears as a question to her own students over the years. Martha’s “body of play” has been exhibited internationally. Honors include exhibition of her work in the 10th Venice Biennale and at the 4th International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam, five awards from I.D. Magazine, a Next Generation Award from Metropolis Magazine, and receipt of a People, Prosperity and the Planet Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Her work has been recognized in publications such as Discover Magazine, ID Magazine, Metropolis Magazine, Fast Company, Business Week, Architectural Record, Transmaterial, and WordChanging. Martha who was born in Colombia, lives in Marshall, N.C. USA. She has lived in France, Italy, The Czech Republic, and Spain.
