Dia de Los Trastos

In Barcelona, each week on ” día de los trastos ” residents dispose of furniture and household goods no longer of use. In the Barri Gotic, this occurs every Tuesday. One Tuesday the community’s unwanted domestic items were redirected into the neighborhood’s plaça, Plaça de la Mercè, known for hosting various expressions of public and private life. The project’s team invited a few friends to bring a piece of discarded furniture into the plaça. This stimulated contagious participation by passerby that grew throughout the afternoon and furnished the plaça dissolving boundaries between the occupants of the city. Domestic spaces within this public space generated a new vision for the neighborhood on that day and into the night, a playful sharing of music and games between homeless people, students, other residents, tourists…
